Wood Pellets : A revolution in home heating
Wood pellets are an extremely cheap and versatile, granular solid fuel and are revolutionising the way we generate heat from natural, non polluting materials like wood. Quality pellet fuels are obtained by subjecting sawdust and uncontaminated (paint and solvent-free) wood waste from saw mills, carpentry and other manufacturing processes to extremely high pressures.
Wood pellets are totally ecological and do not contain any form of glue or adhesive. They keep their shape thanks to lignite, a natural substance found in all wood. Wood pellets represent the most economical, ecological and modern heating fuel for your home.
Why use wood pellets for heating?
Wood is a renewable source of energy and burns very cleanly. What little residue is left over after combustion is completely diodegradable and does not interfere with the delicate natural balance of the planet. Studies have shown that CO2 released into the atmosphere when wood decomposes is re-absorbed by the growth and development of new trees.
Compared with conventional liquid and gas fuels, the use of wood pellets can lead to a massive savings in heating bills, over 50%. While wood in its natural state has a calorific power of 4.4 kW/kg, pellet fuel is 5.3 kW/kg. Pellet density is 650 kg/m3 ( 2 kg of pellets = 1 litre of fuel oil) and water content is 8% by weight.
Packaged pellets can easily be stored in the corner of a garage, cellar or even in a living room because they occupy only 1/3 of the space that the equivalent amount of wood would take up. Pellet fuel stoves only require re-filling once a day, or even less frequently if the demand for heat is lower. Due to the fact that individual pellets are so small and their heat output is so high, it is far easier to achieve precise control over the amount of fuel you need to add to your pellet stove to obtain the desired temperature.
