The Kyoto Protocol came into force February 2005 and obliges the industrialised nations to reduce emissions (carbon dioxide, methane, nitric oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulpher hexafluoride) by at least 5.2% compared to 1990 levels over the period from 2008 - 2012.
